Well, I have been drawing more Manga/Anime inspired sketches lately. I find myself struggling with the duality of a cartoony style in regards to comic strips but a manga style when it comes to actually trying to be a comic artist. I love Manga and Anime and for a while there I was trying to draw a sketch of at least one character from a Manga or Anime that inspired me.
When I decided to jump into the world of Manga not too long ago I just happened to pick up Pluto by Naoki Urasawa and it blew my mind! After years of reading American superhero comics, I never knew a comic book would make me think about the medium in such a different way. From there I pretty much decided that I needed to expect more out of my comics. I needed to stop going through the motions of going to the comic shop for Batman and Fantastic Four for the sake of having them and I should expect to be entertained for the money I am spending and time I am taking to read them.
Not to mention Pluto was just an amazing story. So, I decided to sketch a picture of Atom. He is not my favorite character but definitely the most important to the story and I couldn’t help but love him as much as the story intended me to. I don’t like to recommend things too often since everyone has their own taste, but this Manga really is amazing.
I had this idea a long time ago. I was hoping to make it into an actual every once in a while gag strip but there is only so much cleverness inside of this brain of mine… I still might, but for the time being I’ll just continue making fun of myself instead.
I love the movie/musical Sweeney Todd with Johnny Depp. I’ve always wanted to d a comic about him since he is such a great character. I tried to do a couple of things with the upside down text and the blood that was a little different. I realized I wouldn’t be able to do anything like that in a printed version so I had to try with a web version. Enjoy.
People got really sick of me mentioning the Prime Number thing. I thought it was completely relevant and appropriate but others were definitely not on the same page. I guess they don’t enjoy math as much as I do.
I have a veracious comic book appetite. I can consume them all day long. I don’t know why, but I love the medium. So when I made the discovery that my local library had a decent stash of them it was like finding that long lost treasure in the middle of the Bermuda Triangle.
I can say that over the last couple of years I have read pretty much half of the graphic novels in the library system. Luckily there are two things that will keep me going. The first is that they are constantly bringing in new books and I have heard that they are doing this more so because more and more kids are reading Manga as well as other types of comics. The second is the awesome online catalogue that the library system in my area has. I don’t even have to go to the library and search through the books anymore! I can just look at all of the graphic novels and for a quarter (yes, twenty five cents!) you can have them delivered to the nearest library.
I have taken a picture of my latest grab. It’s a mix of both Manga and Graphic Novel as well as a mix of known titles and a couple of new ones. If I plan and actually try, I can have these all read in two to three weeks. Then I can get back to reading all of the books I bought for Christmas… Wait, wasn’t I suppose to be drawing as well???
I have uploaded all of my Ten Cent Sammy’s comic strips for your enjoyment. Just click on the link. I do not as of right now have any plans on making more, but you never know when life will throw you a curve ball. Please enjoy and come back as I will be loading other comics and drawings I have put together over the course of the year. Of course all of this is in lieu of bigger and better things to come!
