Autism Awareness

ASD Pass it on.
ASD Pass it on.

Let me sum up this strip by mentioning a few things.  First of all, I have been told that this strip is slightly offensive.  When I made it, my intentions were not to poke fun at Autistic folks, but more of to poke fun at myself (I have tried to make the main character look as much like me as my artistic ability allows).  I am 99.9% sure I have Asperger’s and I tend to use that as the subject matter of my comics (if you hadn’t found that out already) and I tend to think that these comic strips are more of a depiction of how I tend to perceive the world.

I won’t bore you about how or why I came to that conclusion.  Maybe someday I will write my story and if you have nothing better to do at that point in time you can read it.  But I feel it must be known that Autism is real and it affects so many people from the slightly eccentric but are able to get by, to the needing of assistance by the good people who love them.

Writing comics like this is my way of getting the word out and trying to do something about it by making the subject known a little more.  If only one person reads my comics and decides to research Asperger Syndrome like I did, then I feel I have put a little bit more intelligence and good karma into the world and hopefully they also got a little laugh as well.  Even if it was at my expense.

Thanks for reading!

Star Trek – Captain Kirk Sketch

I am Kirk
I am Kirk

The family went to the local box store tonight and I saw a shirt that made my wife shake her head in shame.  So I had to get it!  Not just because of that though.  But because it actually is amazingly awesome.  It was a simple Star Trek printed shirt and they had one left in my size so I had to get it.  I am not ashamed of my nerdiness in any way, shape or form.  Let’s face it, I have to represent when I can!  (I also bought a Hogwarts t-shirt as well…)

One of the few comics that I stopped collecting and completely regret having stopped collecting is the IDW Star Trek ongoing series.  I love it almost as much as I love the show and still consider making the trip to the comic shop for the next few months that I am in the area in order to pick up a copy.  Not to mention picking up all of the issues I missed over the last few months of my boycotting monthly comics.

This sketch is one of the few where I thought it came out kind of well.  I used an ancient Wacom Intuos 1 tablet and a copy of Manga Studio.  Nothing I did with either tool came out how I liked and ultimately went back to good old fashion pencil and paper.  But I am happy to share this with you!  Thanks for reading so far and enjoy!

Library Grab 2

I was so excited to be able to find The Drifting Classroom by Kazuo Umezu at my local library.  Every time I Google’d “scariest mangas”, this was one of the titles that comes up each time.  On a whim with my fingers cross I typed it in and not only did they have it, but it was still available!!  I can’t wait to read it.

Also, outside of this picture I was also able to take out Soul Eater Volume 1 by Atsushi Okubo as well as a couple books from the last Library Grab that I am still plugging away at.  I figured next week would be a great time to tackle all of these as I will be on a vacation for a week and will be flying for some of the way.  What better time to read horror manga than on an airplane?  With all of this reading manga, how am I suppose to draw my own?

Friday Sketch

Well, I have been drawing more Manga/Anime inspired sketches lately.  I find myself struggling with the duality of a cartoony style in regards to comic strips but a manga style when it comes to actually trying to be a comic artist.  I love Manga and Anime and for a while there I was trying to draw a sketch of at least one character from a Manga or Anime that inspired me.

When I decided to jump into the world of Manga not too long ago I just happened to pick up Pluto by Naoki Urasawa and it blew my mind!  After years of reading American superhero comics, I never knew a comic book would make me think about the medium in such a different way.  From there I pretty much decided that I needed to expect more out of my comics.  I needed to stop going through the motions of going to the comic shop for Batman and Fantastic Four for the sake of having them and I should expect to be entertained for the money I am spending and time I am taking to read them.

Not to mention Pluto was just an amazing story.  So, I decided to sketch a picture of Atom.  He is not my favorite character but definitely the most important to the story and I couldn’t help but love him as much as the story intended me to.  I don’t like to recommend things too often since everyone has their own taste, but this Manga really is amazing.

My first script!

I have finally wrote my first script. well, it’s not my first script ever… but it’s my first script for future use in one of my upcoming projects. It’s 17 pages but I am going to try to edit it down to 15.
It’s a short story that I have been sitting on for ohhhh 6 years now? Maybe longer… I have tried multiple times expanding it beyond the 10 pages of short story but could never manage to keep the feeling going. Every single time I took it beyond the initial story, it lost something. Plus, from there I always lost interest.
I have probably rewritten it a dozen times over the years but never as a comic script. I am so excited as I reread it over again and can visualize the story I know so well and I am hoping I can translate it into something that everyone else can see.
I have two other short stories that I have been kicking around as well as a short story that I ended up using pieces of for a novel I wrote two years back (another project I am hoping to finish before the end of 2015). Also, I am almost giddy of the idea of taking a “choose your own adventure” story I had written a short while back and also making that into a comic.
Man, all these projects and so little time! I’ll be drawing thumbnails on my lunch hour for the next two years I’m afraid. In the meantime of all of this I am also trying to draw up some strips and some fan art that I hope will keep you interested.  I am hoping to post something new every Wednesday.  Stick around and I will post as things come along!

Sweeney Todd Comic

Sweeney Todd
Sweeney Todd

I love the movie/musical Sweeney Todd with Johnny Depp.  I’ve always wanted to d a comic about him since he is such a great character.  I tried to do a couple of things with the upside down text and the blood that was a little different.  I realized I wouldn’t be able to do anything like that in a printed version so I had to try with a web version.  Enjoy.
