Another fine day at the library! Check out the stash of comics! I’m pretty excited to have been able to grab a few books that I have seen for a few years in the book store but never had a chance to read. Also, a few books by artist Queenie Chan whom I have been recently following on inkblazers. Please check out her blog as well as her work!
Also, I have set up a Facebook page for Jason Douglas’ Comics! Click on the side link to like the page and spread the word! More comics to come!
This post is going to be a quick one this week, sorry. My family and I are on vacation and I haven’t had a ton of time to draw a new strip. But I do have a couple little sketches in my back pocket for just an occasion. I’m hoping by next Wednesday I’ll have something cooked up for you.
I was so excited to be able to find The Drifting Classroom by Kazuo Umezu at my local library. Every time I Google’d “scariest mangas”, this was one of the titles that comes up each time. On a whim with my fingers cross I typed it in and not only did they have it, but it was still available!! I can’t wait to read it.
Also, outside of this picture I was also able to take out Soul Eater Volume 1 by Atsushi Okubo as well as a couple books from the last Library Grab that I am still plugging away at. I figured next week would be a great time to tackle all of these as I will be on a vacation for a week and will be flying for some of the way. What better time to read horror manga than on an airplane? With all of this reading manga, how am I suppose to draw my own?
Well, I have been drawing more Manga/Anime inspired sketches lately. I find myself struggling with the duality of a cartoony style in regards to comic strips but a manga style when it comes to actually trying to be a comic artist. I love Manga and Anime and for a while there I was trying to draw a sketch of at least one character from a Manga or Anime that inspired me.
When I decided to jump into the world of Manga not too long ago I just happened to pick up Pluto by Naoki Urasawa and it blew my mind! After years of reading American superhero comics, I never knew a comic book would make me think about the medium in such a different way. From there I pretty much decided that I needed to expect more out of my comics. I needed to stop going through the motions of going to the comic shop for Batman and Fantastic Four for the sake of having them and I should expect to be entertained for the money I am spending and time I am taking to read them.
Not to mention Pluto was just an amazing story. So, I decided to sketch a picture of Atom. He is not my favorite character but definitely the most important to the story and I couldn’t help but love him as much as the story intended me to. I don’t like to recommend things too often since everyone has their own taste, but this Manga really is amazing.
I have finally wrote my first script. well, it’s not my first script ever… but it’s my first script for future use in one of my upcoming projects. It’s 17 pages but I am going to try to edit it down to 15.
It’s a short story that I have been sitting on for ohhhh 6 years now? Maybe longer… I have tried multiple times expanding it beyond the 10 pages of short story but could never manage to keep the feeling going. Every single time I took it beyond the initial story, it lost something. Plus, from there I always lost interest.
I have probably rewritten it a dozen times over the years but never as a comic script. I am so excited as I reread it over again and can visualize the story I know so well and I am hoping I can translate it into something that everyone else can see.
I have two other short stories that I have been kicking around as well as a short story that I ended up using pieces of for a novel I wrote two years back (another project I am hoping to finish before the end of 2015). Also, I am almost giddy of the idea of taking a “choose your own adventure” story I had written a short while back and also making that into a comic.
Man, all these projects and so little time! I’ll be drawing thumbnails on my lunch hour for the next two years I’m afraid. In the meantime of all of this I am also trying to draw up some strips and some fan art that I hope will keep you interested. I am hoping to post something new every Wednesday. Stick around and I will post as things come along!
I have a veracious comic book appetite. I can consume them all day long. I don’t know why, but I love the medium. So when I made the discovery that my local library had a decent stash of them it was like finding that long lost treasure in the middle of the Bermuda Triangle.
I can say that over the last couple of years I have read pretty much half of the graphic novels in the library system. Luckily there are two things that will keep me going. The first is that they are constantly bringing in new books and I have heard that they are doing this more so because more and more kids are reading Manga as well as other types of comics. The second is the awesome online catalogue that the library system in my area has. I don’t even have to go to the library and search through the books anymore! I can just look at all of the graphic novels and for a quarter (yes, twenty five cents!) you can have them delivered to the nearest library.
I have taken a picture of my latest grab. It’s a mix of both Manga and Graphic Novel as well as a mix of known titles and a couple of new ones. If I plan and actually try, I can have these all read in two to three weeks. Then I can get back to reading all of the books I bought for Christmas… Wait, wasn’t I suppose to be drawing as well???
